SACRAMENTO – Senator Mike Morrell (R-Rancho Cucamonga) released the following statement in response to the legislature’s passage of AB 398, the governor’s cap-and-trade plan to increase gas taxes and fuel greater government spending:
“Contrary to popular belief, Republicans care about our environment. However, cap and trade in California has little to do with climate change and is an end-run to bring more money to state government. It will increase our gas taxes by as much 73 cents per gallon, raise the cost of electricity, and further harm our economy by jeopardizing the financial security of millions of families.
“I am disappointed that Assembly Republican Leader Chad Mayes supported this tax increase and also persuaded a few others to do the same, which ultimately led to the bill’s passage. Most Republicans voted to protect hardworking Californians and their families by opposing this scheme. We held true to the political principles of limiting government’s power and reducing taxes. Individuals should be able to keep more of their hard-earned money so that they can invest in their futures – not fund big government priorities like the governor’s high-speed rail train.
“I am not alone in this fight. Still, the majority of Republicans will continue to work as hard as possible to stop the onslaught of liberal extremism in Sacramento by defending taxpayers, reining in the bureaucracy, and making sure government ranks the citizen above the state. ”
